DANCE IS NOT FOR US ist ein kraftvolles Solo, in dem Omar Rajeh eine persönliche Reise durch Erinnerungen, Sehnsüchte und Traumata unternimmt. Mit seiner intensiven und impulsiven Performance drückt er den Schmerz über den Niedergang seiner Heimatstadt Beirut aus – einst ein Ort der Freude, nun gezeichnet von wirtschaftlichem Zusammenbruch und politischer Fremdbestimmung. Sein Tanz verkörpert das Gefühl der Hilflosigkeit und den chaotischen Strudel aus Wut und Verzweiflung. Im Stücktitel konstatiert er: „Wir haben kein Recht auf Tanz.“ Und weiß genau das zu verkörpern: „Wir nehmen unseren Schmerz und gehen mit ihm auf Tournee. Wir tanzen mit ihm.“ Rajehs Körper erzählt von den Opfern, die das libanesische Volk erbringen muss, und erinnert an eine Vergangenheit, die sich nicht in die Zukunft übertragen ließ. Auf der Bühne allein erschafft er neue Regeln und Strukturen, die Hoffnung symbolisieren. DANCE IS NOT FOR US stellt zentrale Fragen über Macht, Identität und die Rolle des Tanzes in der heutigen Welt.

Omar Rajeh ist ein renommierter Vertreter des zeitgenössischen Tanzes, der diese Kunstform im Libanon und in der arabischen Welt wesentlich prägt. Im Jahr 2002 gründete er die Tanzkompanie Maqamat und 2004 die Beirut International Platform of Dance (BIPOD). 2017 realisierte Maqamat eines seiner ehrgeizigsten Projekte, den Bau von Citerne Beirut, einem innovativen Kulturzentrum, das in seiner Art einzigartig im Libanon war. Citerne Beirut musste im August 2019 aufgrund des wirtschaftlichen und politischen Zusammenbruchs des Landes abgerissen werden. Im Dezember 2019 zog Omar Rajeh nach Lyon, Frankreich, und startete die digitale Plattform Citerne.live. Er wurde vom französischen Kulturministerium mit dem Titel 'Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres' (Ritter des Ordens der Künste und der Literatur) ausgezeichnet.

Dance is not for us is a powerful solo, in which Omar Rajeh undertakes a personal journey through memories, longing and trauma. With his intense and impulsive performance, he expresses his pain at the decline of his home city Beirut – once a place of peace, now marked by economic collapse and foreign political control. His dance embodies the sense of helplessness and the chaotic whirl of rage and despair. In the title of his piece, he asserts that we have no right to dance. And he knows precisely how to embody this: “We take our pain and go on tour with it. We dance with it.” Rajeh’s body tells of the sacrifices that the Lebanese people is having to make and reminds us of a past that could not be transposed into the future. Alone on stage he creates new rules and structures that symbolise hope. Dance is not for us asks crucial questions about power, identity and the role of dance in the world today.

Omar Rajeh is a renowned figure in contemporary dance, making a significant impact in Lebanon and the Arab world. In 2002, he founded the contemporary dance company Maqamat and in 2004, the Beirut International Platform of Dance (BIPOD). In 2017, Maqamat completed one of its most ambitious projects, building Citerne Beirut, an innovative cultural center and one of its kind in Lebanon. Citerne Beirut was forced to be dismantled in August 2019 due to the economic and political collapse in the country. In December 2019, Omar Rajeh moved to Lyon, France and launched the digital platform Citerne.live. He was distinguished by the French Ministry of Culture with the title of ‘Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters).
